ABOUT PASSIVE HOUSE

What is a Passive House? We're here to help

Passive house (from the German Passivhaus) originated in Germany, Europe. The concept has been around since 1991, and is based upon the premise that following a few key principles when building will result in healthy, comfortable and energy efficient spaces that require little to no cooling or heating. Passive House buildings are designed to be highly performing and thermally comfortable all year round.

The term “Passive House” or “Passive Home” can be quite misleading as the concept is not only applied to houses, but all types of buildings. Passive House is also different from Solar Passive.
Across the globe and regardless of the type of project built, certified Passive House buildings have one thing in common: an exceptionally high level of energy efficiency and comfort.

A Passive House is designed and built following with five principles:

– Use of thermal insulation (type and thickness requirements varies based on project location’s climate)
– Airtightness
– Mechanical heat recovery ventilation (HRV)
– High performance windows (usually double or triple glazing)
– Thermal bridge free construction

Even without obtaining a Passive House (PH) certification, a building designed around those 5 principles will offer most of the benefits of a Certified Passive House construction.
